A stunning photographic record of Michael Palin's journey across the Sahara, accompanying the BBC television series Sahara In the spring of 2001, photographer Basil Pao set off to accompany Michael Palin and a BBC film crew on the latest of his famous journeys, this time traversing the length and breadth of the Sahara Desert. During the next few months, their fascinating route took them through nine countries and an astonishing variety of landscapes and cultures. From Gibraltar, the team crossed the straits to Morocco, visiting the colourful, vibrant cities of Tangier, Fes and Marrakech, before heading across the almighty Atlas Mountains into southern Algeria. Next, they reached the frontier with Western Sahara, spending time observing the Polisario Front, before continuing south to Mauritania, and then to Mali, where they embarked on a boat trip on the great River Niger towards Timbuktu. From Niger, they ventured north over the Hoggar Mountains to the gas and oil fields of Algeria, then on to Libya and through Tunisia, finally ending their journey back at the Mediterranean.Basil Pao has succeeded in capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of this region, the vitality and rich diversity of its peoples and traditions. The result is this magnificent book.
